What Doesn’t Get Said

There are small moments in conversation where we adjust what we say.

We soften something slightly, or choose a different word, or decide not to say it at all. Not because it’s untrue, but because it feels easier. Less likely to create tension. More likely to keep things smooth.

It’s often so quick we barely notice it.

Sometimes it shows up as a pause before speaking. Or a sentence that trails off. Or something we think about later, replaying the conversation and noticing what we didn’t quite say.

Not big things necessarily. Often quite small.

But over time, those small adjustments can add up. A slightly edited version of ourselves, shared with the world.

It’s something I’ve been noticing more recently, both in everyday life and in the conversations I have in practice.

Not as a problem to fix, but just as something that’s there.

What’s interesting is that it’s not always obvious at first.

Sometimes it only becomes clearer over time. A realisation that something has been held back, or softened, or left unsaid. Not deliberately, just quietly, almost habitually.

And often, that noticing is enough to begin with.

In a consultation, there’s space to speak a little more freely. To say things in your own way, without needing to filter or adjust quite so much.

Nothing forced. Nothing pushed.

Just the chance for things to be expressed a bit more honestly, at their own pace.

And when that happens, even in a small way, something often begins to shift.

It’s not always dramatic.

Sometimes it’s just a sense of being a little more at ease in yourself. A little less need to hold things in place. A bit more room to respond naturally, rather than carefully.

Small changes, but meaningful ones.

A quiet pause in the middle of things.
